Mar 27: What's happening in Canberra for Earth Hour

1. Friends and family Earth Hour walk

WHAT: A friends and family EARTH HOUR walk along Anzac Parade and around Lake Burley Griffin with Bishop Pat Power and Dr Maxine Cooper, Commissioner for Sustainability and the Environment

WHEN: Meet at 8.20pm Saturday, 28 March 2009

WHERE: Meet at the Corner of Blamey Street and Anzac Parade

OTHER: Everyone is welcome, including dogs on leads. Walkers should ensure they are appropriately attired, including walking shoes and warm clothes. Please bring a water bottle and torch if you wish. No bookings necessary just turn up.

2. Tim the Yowie Man Earth Hour walk


WHAT: Tim the Yowie Man and ACT Rangers will lead a free, informative EARTH HOUR walk up to the top of Mulligans Flat at Forde to see the lights of Canberra go out during Earth Hour and hear about the yowie and bunyip myths of the area.

WHEN: Meet at 7pm, Saturday, 28 March 2009. The walk will finish at 9pm.

WHERE: Meet at Mulligans Flat carpark, off Amy Ackman St, Forde.

OTHER: Remember to bring a torch and please no prams as it is a bushwalk. Children should be able to walk 2km in bushland with torch, good shoes, and warm jacket. Attendees are also encouraged to walk, ride or car pool to the event.

3. Hard Rain exhibition

The Hard Rain exhibition is a thought provoking photo exhibition about the effects of climate change. The exhibition finishes on Sunday 29 March and is located at City Walk near The Canberra Times Fountain.

4. King O’Malley’s Irish Pub

King O’Malley’s will be holding a Guinness by candle light event on Saturday 28 March. For more information visit the King O'Malley's website.

5. Major attractions turning off

Parliament House, Old Parliament House, Australian War Memorial, National Library, High Court, National Gallery, the National Library of Australia, the National Museum of Australia, Questacon have all confirmed they will turn off their non-essential lights for Earth Hour. Structural lighting at the National Carillon, Commonwealth Place and National Capital Exhibition will also be turned off for the hour from 8.30pm. In addition, the International Flag Display, memorials along ANZAC parade and the Canadian flagpole at Regatta Point will be in darkness from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.

6. Your World. Your Say: NewActon EnviroMonth T-Shirt Slogan competition

The top 50 slogans will be printed on eco-friendly t-shirts and exhibited in the NewActon courtyard on Saturday 28 March. Prizes will also be handed out on the night. For more information call Suzi on 6126 1300.
