Mar 19: Minister encourages Canberrans to sign up for Earth Hour

With Earth Hour less than two weeks away, Simon Corbell, Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Water, is encouraging all Canberrans to register their support on the website.

“In 2007 Canberra had the highest Earth Hour participation rate in Australia and we’re hoping that we can top that 73% rate,” Minister Corbell said.

“So far this year, over 1,000 cities and towns across 80 countries have registered to be a part of this historic event.

“Momentum is building within Canberra and dozens of restaurants, cafes and office buildings are all set to turn their lights off on Saturday 28 March at 8.30pm.

“All of our major national attractions will turn off their non-essential lights, including Parliament House, the National Museum of Australia and the National Library.

“Individuals and families are also encouraged to take a few minutes to sign up to the website at www.earthhour.org.

“Canberra is known for being one of the most environmentally aware cities in Australia. Earth Hour is a great opportunity for our nation’s capital to show its support for addressing climate change.”
